Maths fundamentals

It is my experience that the fundamental numeracy skills are not being emphasised in the schooling system. Learners are progressing through the system with no "feel" for numbers, with a huge emphasis being placed on the fact that a calculator can work it out for you!! This misses the entire point of the numeracy skill and leads, in my view, to a downgrading of the "fun" of mental arithmetic. Without this skill, there exists no "feel" for want of a better word, or I suppose "instinct" would also suffice, and incorrect answers are given regularly "because that is the answer the calculator got".
So, tremble little children when I take over the whole education system, because you will be forced to learn your multiplication tables, how to add and subtract and horror of horrors- the long division. And your progress through the system will be dependent on your ability to get at least 50% of the answers right- unlike the current system where one in three correct is quite enough to get you through.
